About Ultimate Tic-Tac-Toe

Ultimate Tic-Tac-Toe takes the familiar three-in-a-row concept and expands it into something far more demanding. The playing field is a 3x3 grid of nine smaller 3x3 sub-grids, and every move carries consequences that ripple beyond the immediate cell. Several views of the game show red circles and blue X marks filling the grid cells as play progresses. What makes this version distinct is that each move you make doesn't just stake a claim on the board — it also dictates where your opponent must play next. A seemingly strong move can quietly work against you, and that tension is the heart of the game.

Practice against a computer at varying difficulty levels, or go head-to-head with a friend in two-player mode.

How to Play Ultimate Tic-Tac-Toe: Win the Large Field

The large 9x9 board is made up of nine small 3x3 fields. Winning one of those small fields brings you closer to winning the large one — but the path there is anything but straightforward.

Turn Structure and Sending Rules

    • Crosses move first and may place their mark in any available cell on the board.
    • Whichever cell within a small field the crosses choose, that cell's position "sends" the noughts to the corresponding small field on the large board. For example, a move in the lower-right corner of any small field sends the opponent to the lower-right small field.
    • The noughts then make their move in that designated small field, which in turn sends the crosses to a new small field by the same logic.
    • If a player is sent to a small field that is already won or completely filled, that player may make a move on any available field instead.

Winning and Claiming Small Fields

    • When a move completes a line of three in a small field — following standard tic-tac-toe rules — that small field is marked with the winning player's sign (X or O).
    • Once a small field is won or completely filled, no further moves can be made within it.
    • Small fields currently available for a move are highlighted in green.

Ending the Game

    • A player wins the overall game by claiming three large X's or O's in a row across the large field.
    • If no possible moves remain and neither player has achieved that, the game ends in a draw.
