Shogi: Japanese Chess is a two-player strategy board game where the goal is to checkmate the opponent's king. Several scenes show the board rendered with a light brown wood-grain pattern, vertical grain lines, and occasional knots. White and cream-colored wedge-shaped pieces appear placed on the grid in multiple views, with some facing upward and others facing downward. Matches can be played against artificial intelligence, with another person on the same device, or against a rival online in multiplayer mode.

The whites move first, and players alternate turns from there. A turn consists of either moving one of your pieces to an allowed square or dropping a piece from your reserve onto the board. Reserve pieces are those captured from the opponent — and crucially, captured pieces switch sides and become available for the capturing player to deploy.

When a piece reaches the enemy's camp, it can be promoted by flipping it over. Every piece except the king and the golden general is eligible for promotion.

A checkmate occurs when the opponent's king stands on a square attacked by one of your pieces and has no legal way to escape or defend. Below are the movement rules for each piece.

Piece Movement Rules

• King: Moves one square in any direction, except to a square controlled by an enemy piece.
• Rook: Moves horizontally or vertically any number of unoccupied squares.
• Elephant: Moves diagonally in any direction any number of unoccupied squares.
• Golden General: Moves one square horizontally, vertically in any direction, or diagonally forward.
• Silver General: Moves one square diagonally in any direction or one square vertically forward.
• Horse: Moves one square vertically forward, then one square diagonally to the right or left, with no possibility of retreat.
• Spear: Moves forward vertically only, any number of unoccupied squares.
• Pawn: Moves one square forward vertically and captures straight ahead, not diagonally.
