Strings and Frets

The notation system works like this: one hand plucks the strings while the other presses the frets. String numbering runs from thinnest to thickest — string 1 is the thinnest and string 6 is the thickest. When a line reads String: 1, 2, 3, the melody moves across the first, second, and third strings in that order.

Fret numbers tell you exactly where to press. A sequence like 5-6-10-2-7-8-10 means pluck the string once at fret 5, then once at fret 6, once at fret 10, once at fret 2, and so on through the sequence. The number 0 means the string is played open — not pressed at all.

Dashes and Intervals

Dashes between numbers are separators that also indicate interval length. In a sequence like 5-6——10-2, the gap between frets 5 and 6 is shorter than the gap between frets 6 and 10. More dashes mean a longer interval.

Brackets and String Order

When a melody spans more than one string, brackets mark which string to pluck for each note:

• No bracket: first string
• (): second string
• []: third string

So a line reading String: 1, 2, 3. 5-(6)-[10]-2-7-8-10 means: pluck string 1 at fret 5, then string 2 at fret 6, then string 3 at fret 10, then string 1 at fret 2, and continue in that pattern.
